This is sometimes confused with the more complex Loss of Income type of insurance.
Personal Accident insurance invariably simply compensates for injury, such as disability or loss of limbs or use of limbs. It does not replace or subsidise income.
For example compensation may be claimed for loss of a limb. This is then a one-off payment (no pun intended!).
Another issue with Personal Accident evolves around 'blame'. If for example you are employed and have an accident at work it may be that you are in a position to take action against the employer - under Health and Safety legisaltion.
Generally you will find that any sort of accident at work is investigated by the Trade Union or Trade Association (Berufsgenossenschaft). You should follow up this line of enquiry.
The necessary medical tratment would of course be covered normally in your health insurance and the Berufsgenossenschaft would follow up any additional costs, which may also result in a claim for compensation.
If you are self-employed (freelance) then you should consider Personal Accident insurance as well as 'loss of Income' insurance.
