HOME CONTENTS AND PERSONAL POSSESSIONS

This can be provided either by a local national insurance company or by an International company. The advantages of the International insurance, for English speakers, is that all the documentation is in English and it is more comprehensive.

The main differences are as follows:

Local insurances are invariably restricted to covering ‘natural perils', such as fire, storm, flood etc., as well as theft (with forcible entry).

They may not cover accidental losses or damages.

International insurance has optional covers for both 'Home Contents' on a natural perils basis and/or Personal Possessions on an 'all risk' basis .e.g. accidental loss or damage outside of the home.

International insurance automatically offers some liability insurance whereas the Local one does not, although this casn be taken as a seoarte contract - see the page oin Liabiltiy Insurance. Liability within the International insurnace can only be taken along with the Home Contents and/or Personal Possessions cover.

Suggested solution

If you have valuable possessions and are accident/loss prone – then it would probably be better for you to opt for the International cover.

If on the other hand, you consider yourself to be ‘careful’ or could ‘accept’ accidental losses or damages, then either the International Home Contents only cover or the German option would suffice. The German contract is in the German language but application forms and a summary of cover in English are available.
